The historic facts of the Bitless Bridle in the Western World
I say in the Western World because no doubt those Cowboys and Indians were racing around in bitless long before we cottoned on to the concept !
Various claims have been made by different manufactures of bitless bridle. The actual “original” recorded design dates way back to 1894 (McCloud). Improvements to this were made in 1896, 1899 then in 1911 a Mr Ivan Fox from the US came up with a bitless bridle design that in his words “provided a flexible nose-band having between its ends a rigid member which is shorter than the noseband and has a radius of curvature greater than that of the horse's nasal bone, so that pressure may be applied upon the crest of the bone”.
Of course there were the hackamores, bosals, and sidepulls at various stages in the evolution of the bitless bridle. But thankfully we all moved along somewhat from the 1900’s!
Don Woodruff was the inventor of the Be Nice Bridle followed by Allun Bucks, a horse trainer from Ramona in California, who in 1988 came up with the revolutionary Spirit Bridle. Following a feature on Allun Bucks in the New Scientist as the inventor of this radical new bridle, in 2002 this design was further developed, Patented and marketed by Dr Cook.
One particular Bitless Bridle design, which is very well know today, included holes for receiving studs for applying painless pressure! Apparently studs of different sizes could be fitted to this design in a whole range of locations, depending upon the amount of pressure required !!!
I have to ask … since when did studs become a pain free way of applying pressure ?
So there you have it, direct from the Patent Office and various snippits of information freely available on the world wide web the history, in a nutshell, of the bitless bridle!
We make no claims here to be “the original” or “the best”. We have been producing the Be Kind bridle since the early 90’s and have many hundreds of happy customers and more importantly horses. We leave it to our customers can decide if this is “the best, the horses are certainly the first to tell us if its going to work for them!
We are proud of our design (which has been fully registered with the Patent Office, so please do not copy!), we listened to our own horses, decided what did or didn’t work and created what we consider to be one of the most efficient bitless bridles on the market today. Some will love it, some won’t , that’s life! What is important is YOU LISTEN to your horse and let him tell you if he wants to be bit free or not.
Our aim with the Be Kind Bitless Bridle is merely to get as many horses as possible out there bit free. If you do that with a “Be Kind” bridle or any other brand it really doesn’t matter.. just simply BE KINDER to your horse.
